Mallorca has a proliferation of budget hotels. Put a search into Expedia or Booking.com for any day of the year and you’ll be met with an overwhelming list of affordable places to stay, from mega coastal resorts with multiple pools and activities, to characterful B&Bs in rural settings. Short of trawling through the reviews of each and every one, it can be difficult to make a decision on which is the best budget place to stay. That’s where we come in. 1. Hotel Vistamar, Porto-Colom
Best for boat watching
This four-star hotel has a great location in a quiet, non-touristy part of the island and overlooks the bay of Porto-Colom, which is dotted with pretty wooden fishing boats. Take a stroll to the harbour to buy fish straight off the boats and watch nets being mended on the quay. Popular Cala Marçal beach is also within walking distance, where you can book scuba diving or sailing. There’s an indoor swimming pool with sauna and hammam, if the weather takes a turn, as well as two outdoor pools, tennis and mini-golf.

2. Son Palou, Orient
Best for a rural stay
Wake up to birdsong at this charming 14th-century rural finca. There’s just 15 individually styled rooms and suites and a lovely restaurant, all tastefully and traditionally decorated with terracotta floor tiles, exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings and antique wooden furniture. Walkers and cyclists will love it and — although there’s no bar or spa — drinks can be ordered any time, and treatments such as reflexology and reiki arranged. If you can wrench yourself from the pool, Orient has a handful of restaurants and you can book horse riding lessons. If you decide to hire a car, you’ll appreciate the free parking.

3. Hotel Joan Miro Museum, Cala Major
Best for art lovers
Dedicated to the famous Catalan artist, this modern, bright hotel is peppered with artworks and features acknowledging Miro’s expressionist and cubist style. Though not situated within the most attractive area of Palma, at Cala Mayor, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró museum and a sandy beach are nearby, with central Palma only a five-minute drive. The lobby extends to a bar and restaurant serving mainly Mediterranean fare with a terrace and outdoor pool beyond. All 97 rooms display striking artwork over the bed and have private terraces, some with sea views.

4. Sóller Plaza Hotel, Sóller
Best for hiking and biking
Splendidly situated on the attractive, cafe-lined central square of the old town of Sóller, this elegant boutique hotel housed in a 19th-century building is ideally located for exploring the town and its stirring architecture. It’s also a good base for hiking and biking in the Tramuntana Mountains, and exploring the sandy beaches of Port Sóller, which can be reached in 20 minutes by historic tram. The hotel’s bright, welcoming public areas include a leafy patio and popular restaurant, while the 21 rooms are decorated in muted shades of brown and green.

5. Hotel Nixe Palace, Cala Major
Best for sea views
Despite having hosted Grace Kelly and Eroll Flyn, this lavish hotel has some of the lowest prices for a luxurious stay in the city, partly due to its location in touristy Cala Major, which is rather less pretty than old town Palma. Situated right on the beachfront it has a large outdoor pool with sea view and is big on facilities, with three restaurants, a piano bar and a spa.

6. Hotel Esplendido, Sóller
Best for couples
This stylish hotel has been a fixture of Sóller since 1954 and retains a feel from that era with its 1950s artefacts such as vintage mirrors, radios, artworks, vinyl record collection, chairs and lamps, with some Scandinavian decor thrown in. There’s a leafy roof garden, restaurant, two pools, a spa with a sauna, hammam, sensory showers, treatment room and gym. It’s on the promenade facing the sea and both sandy beaches and the port of Sóller’s shops, bars and restaurants are on the doorstep.

7. Palau Sa Font, La Lonja
Best for lovers of historic buildings
Originally a palace dating from the 16th century, this elegant hotel is located in the heart of the old fishing quarter, La Lonja. Easily one of Mallorca’s better cheap hotels, it is full of character, with features such as exposed stone walls, an open inner courtyard, designer furniture, linen curtains and contemporary artworks. Despite being relatively compact, it manages to include facilities such as a roof terrace, splash pool and solarium. Chic galleries, shops, bars and restaurants are little more than a one-minute walk away, with the cathedral and seafront just a ten-minute stroll.

8. Iberostar Selection Llaut Palma, Playa de Palma
Best for the beach
Set among gorgeous landscaped gardens in one of the more tranquil areas of Playa de Palma beach, this five-star hotel offers rooms for under €150 a night. Given it has outdoor and indoor pools, a gym and complimentary exercise classes including yoga, salsa and pilates, you’ll be fighting fit after staying here. When you discover the Sensations Spa with its sauna and steam rooms and the rooftop fine-dining restaurant there’s a danger you won’t want to leave the hotel at all, but the cocktail bars and cafes that line the beach are just a short walk away.

9. Alua Calas de Mallorca, Calas de Mallorca
Best for all-inclusive
Families will love the free kids’ club at this hotel on Mallorca’s east coast. While the children are busy with crafts or games, you can head to one of the two adults-only pools for some quiet time or head to Cala Antena Beach, which is just a six-minute walk away. The hotel is large, with 512 rooms, but all are spacious and bright and many have balconies with sea views.

10. S’Hotel D’es Puig, Deià
Best for village life
In the artistic mountain village of Deià, almost directly opposite the celebrity haunt La Residencia, is this rustic family-run boutique hotel, which gives you a similar mountain experience at a fraction of the cost. The characterful stone-built, green-shuttered property dates from 1917 and has plenty of traditional Mallorcan features, such as wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiling. Two quiet pool terraces provide plenty of space for lounging with the dramatic Serra de Tramuntana mountains as a backdrop. The village, which has long attracted writers and artists, became a Unesco world heritage site in 2010. Don’t miss Robert Graves’ house, just a short walk from the hotel.
